The Fellowship of the Walk Challenge

Can you walk the length that it would take to get from the Shire to Mordor to destroy the One Ring?

Join us on a quest to see how many miles you can walk from September 22 to March 25, the same time that it took Frodo and Sam to reach Mordor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic Lord of the Rings trilogy.

You can pick up a log sheet at the library or download a copy here. Prizes will be awarded to the top nine walkers! All ages are welcome to participate.

Our kickoff event takes place on Saturday, September 23 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Stop by the library to receive your log along with a scavenger hunt sheet that will list different locations/landmarks through downtown Rehoboth. See if you find them all as you start your quest to Mordor.

Stay tuned for other events that we’ll be holding at the library during the challenge!

Why 1,779 miles and why September 22 to March 25?

September 22 is the date that Frodo left home to start his quest and March 25 is the day that he and Sam reached Mount Doom. 1,779 miles is the distance between the two locations, according to Tolkien fans.

What counts as “walking?”

From the moment you get out of bed to the moment you climb back into bed, any walking counts as walking. You do not need to seek out any trails or purchase a treadmill, although walking trails are always a fun way to rack up miles!

How do I know how many miles I’ve walked?

There are many free apps that you can download which are designed to track how many miles you’ve walked. You can also purchase a pedometer if you would prefer not to use your phone.

What are the prizes?

The first nine walkers to complete the challenge will receive commemorative T-shirts. The first person to complete the challenge will also receive a gift card to Rehoboth Beach Running Company as a grand prize.

What if nobody completes 1,779 miles?

If nobody completes the challenge, the prizes will simply be awarded to the top nine walkers, with the grand prize going to whoever walked the most miles.
